National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) putting green trial
at Olympia Fields Country Club
Every 5 years the USDA NTEP program evaluates new turfgrass varieties across all commonly used turfgrass species. In 2020, NTEP initiated a creeping bentgrass putting green trial at Land Grant Universities across the country. Most of these trials are conducted at University research sites that don’t receive traffic and often aren’t maintained to the level of a golf course putting green. The NTEP program has several on-site trials that are established on a golf course practice putting green surface. In the 2020 trial, 11 of these trials are conducted at University research sites and four are on golf courses. Those trials are at Olympia Fields CC here in the Chicagoland area; Shadow Glen GC in Olathe, KS; Karsten Creek CC in Stillwater, OK; and Tokatee GC in Makenzie Bridge, OR. Each trial has 20 entries with standard entries of Penncross, Penn A-1, Piranha, Declaration, and L-93XD and 15 new varieties that are being considered for public release. The trial is now in its fourth season of evaluation and attendees will be able to view these new varieties under greens management conditions. Varieties released since the start of the trial include Spectrum, Piper, and Oakley. Come see for yourself how this latest generation of putting greens bentgrass cultivars look and perform.
